General
Austria's social system, such as its minimum income guarantee or social security and pension contributions, contribute to a high level of social security for its population. See below for an overview of the Austrian benefits and healthcare system, according to recent statistics.
Austria's Social Benefits
Together with France, Italy, Spain and Germany, Austria is one of the countries that spend more than a quarter of GDP on social spending. The Austrian social security system has a complex structure involving several players at national and regional level.
It includes health, pension, accident and unemployment insurance, and the system of compulsory insurance applies to all employees. The prerequisite for this is that the employee’s income is above the minimum earnings threshold (2025: € 551.10 pcm). Social security contributions are paid automatically through payroll accounting for employees. Different social insurance institutions are responsible, depending on the type of employment.
